Time To Cut The Cord ~ My New Blog Goes Live!

The time has come for me to give my maternal line its own space in the genealogy blogosphere.

For the past few days I have been MIA with my head buried deep in the Georgia Probate Records that were recently added to FamilySearch.org. Recent news of the impending closure of the Georgia Archives to the public made the availability of these records on the internet even more significant, especially to me as a researcher whose major area a research is Georgia.

Last night, I made a major find related to my maternal line out of Meriwether County Georgia.  A genealogy “Happy Dance” is definitely in order here!!

This morning, I decided it was time to take the next step and start a blog devoted to my maternal ancestors. Actually, this blog has been waiting in the queue, so to speak, since last year but, the time just didn’t feel right.  Honestly, I talked myself out of it thinking I would not have anything to post. Major brick walls are everywhere in this line.

Things, however, are looking up.  Persistence, patience and stubbornness will pay off. Those brick walls are beginning to crack and show signs of crumbling down. Pairing DNA with genealogy has become very popular, and I have met several new cousins through my Relative Finder matches on 23andMe. The ancestors are seriously in the mix here (no pun intended), and I expect major breakthroughs as we sift through our trees for clues to our common ancestor.

Yes! Things are definitely taking a turn.

So, I invite you to join me as I “cut the cord” and give my maternal family a home of their own.

May I introduce…..

Sentimental Sunday – Memories of Russia ~ Then & Now

In August 1969, my high school Russian class was given an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity to take an all expenses paid trip to Russia.  I often reflect back on that trip and how blessed we were, as young African Americans, to have such a unique experience.   We were accompanied by a photographer from Ebony magazine, and the trip was featured in the magazine’s November 1969 issue in an article titled To Russia – With Understanding.  We were also followed by cameras from the television news show 60 Minutes and featured in a segment on the show – Booker T. Washington High School Goes to Russia.  We were interviewed by a local television station here in Atlanta, and there was an article in the newspaper.  Yes, it was our “15 minutes of fame”.

At our 40th high school class reunion this past August, we were reunited with classmates from our trip.  This reunion was made even more special by a visit from our Russian teacher, Ms. Billie (Davis) Gaines.  Many of us had not seen Ms. Gaines since high school.  There were hugs and laughter, and yes, a few tears.  It was truly a joyous occasion.  There was much to share and reminisce about.  It was an evening we will probably never forget.  It was a night for -   Memories of Russia – Then & Now.

Sentimental Sunday ~ Happy Easter!

This is one of my favorite photos.  That’s me looking all “prim and proper” as my mom would say. It was taken on Easter Sunday at a park in downtown Atlanta. I think I was about 7 or 8 years old. I loved to dress up for Easter, and get my hair done in lots of babydoll curls. It was always a happy day for me. I hope you have happy Easter memories too.

Happy Easter!
